From Emergency Relief to Self-Reliance

A resident of Khewa District, Nangarhar Province, was selected as a beneficiary of the Life-saving food assistance and resilience improvement for vulnerable households in Nangarhar Province. Before receiving support, the family faced significant challenges in meeting their daily food needs. Like many other vulnerable households, they struggled to provide sufficient food for their children and had very limited opportunities to earn an income.

Through this project, the family received emergency food assistance to address their immediate needs, along with poultry support to help establish a sustainable source of food and income. Today, the chickens provide the family with fresh eggs, improving the quality of their diet. By selling surplus eggs, they are also able to earn additional income, which helps cover essential household expenses such as food and healthcare.

"The food assistance helped us get through one of the most difficult periods of our lives. The poultry support gave us new hope for the future. Now our children eat fresh eggs, and the income we earn from selling the extra eggs greatly helps us meet our family's daily needs."

This project demonstrates that combining emergency humanitarian assistance with livelihood support not only addresses the immediate needs of vulnerable families but also empowers them to rebuild their lives, strengthen their resilience against future shocks, and take sustainable steps toward self-reliance.
